The Atonement (a)

 

  1. Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21.

(a)    Luther loved to call the gospel ¡§the wonderful exchange¡¨.  What do you think he meant by that?

(b)   Can you see the wonderful exchange in Galatians 3:13, Colossians 2:13-14, and 1 Peter2:22-24 and 3:18?

 

  1. Read Matthew 4:1-11.  In the light of the wonderful exchange, what is the main point of this story?

 

3.  Read mark 3:27 and Hebrews 2:14-15.

(a)    How do these passages explain what happened on the cross?

(b)   Can you see this theology in John 12:27-33, 2 Corinthians 4:4, Colossians 1:13-14, and I John 3:8?

(c)    Is this a better way to explain the cross?  Is it easier for people to accept an explanation in terms of victory over the forces of evil, than to accept the idea that they must confess that they are sinners and need to be forgiven?

 

  1. Read John 15:13.

(a)    How does this passage explain what happened on the cross?

(b)   Can you see this theology in 1 John 4:9-10, 4:19, and Romans 5:8?

(c)    Can you se it in 2 Corinthians 5:16-21?
